Origin stories have been growing steadily more popular. The latest story to be reworked is Lara Croft in the new Tomb Raider game. We look at the three best origin stories and reboot from the last few years.

X Men Origins: Wolverine

2009 saw the release of the first of the X men origin films. Starring once again Hugh Jackman in the title role, the film starts in 1845 and shows Wolverines first experience of his mutation as bone claws grow from his hands in a rage as he sees someone kill his father. The film also features Gambit and Deadpool, who had been missing from the previous X men films. The film was slated by critics and fans, receiving only 37% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film critic website.

Tomb Raider

Lara Croft is the latest pop culture icon to receive a brand new origin story. Lara Croft, whose fame from Tomb Raider games and books is so big she has her own slots game at www.tombraiderslot.net/ and stars once again in the latest offering from Square Enix. Croft is depicted as an archaeology graduate student who goes off in search of the lost kingdom of Yamatai, with a team of archaeologists, soldiers and others. After running into a storm, the team is shipwrecked on an island near Japan and Lara has to fight a number of enemies… I won’t spoil it for you. There was a bit of press uproar around the game as it features a scene where Lara is attacked which depicts what some say was gratuitous violence, but all in all, the game is excellent, receiving critical acclaim and great review scores.

Star Trek

J J Abrams’ Star Trek reboot stars the characters from the original series, recast with Zachary Quinto as Spock, Christopher Pine as Kirk and a joyous Simon Pegg as Scotty, with terrible Scottish accent to boot. Cleverly, J J Abrams reboots Star Trek entirely by destroying a planet which is vital in the original timeline, while getting Quinto’s Spock to deliver a speech which explains that this act has created a whole new Star Trek timeline. The film was a huge success, with J J Abrams going on to make a sequel, Start Trek Into Darkness starring Benedict Cumberbatch as a terrorist named John Harrison and now being asked to make the newest Star Wars film. Let’s hope he makes that as well as Star Trek, including the trademark lens flare he is known for.
