A Thomson Airways plane, which was operating on a scheduled flight from Alicante to Cardiff on Saturday the 22nd of June, aborted its landing at Cardiff airport, the flight crew reporting a problem with the flaps of the Boeing 757-200. The aircraft returned to try again some 10 minutes later, landing safely and without incident. The emergency crews were on standby but were not required.

The aircraft then continued in service on another scheduled flight, two hours later, with a delay of one hour. The airline confirmed that the crew declared “PAN”, an urgent situation but not necessarily life threatening, unlike a “MAYDAY”, as a precaution due to a minor flaps problem and landed safely.

The following day, the same aircraft returned to Cardiff on a scheduled flight from Arrecife in Spain, when the crew also declared PAN on approach, reporting a flaps problem, continuing to land at a slightly higher than normal speed.

The airline once again confirmed a “minor flaps problem”, whereas the airport confirmed the emergency service were put on standby, once again, not being needed. The aircraft, which was built in 1999 and started life with British Airways, before a brief spell at Air 2000, onto First Choice Airways and with Thomson since 2008, remained in Cardiff after this flight.

Meanwhile, on Monday, a Swiftair ATR Turboprop, covering for Air Europa on the Madrid to Vigo route, had to make an emergency landing at Barajas airport, minutes after takeoff.

The aircraft, carrying 68 passengers, left the Madrid airport at 17:58 hours on Monday. Eleven minutes later, the pilot detected a problem with one of the engines and decided to return to Barajas.

Having declared the situation to air traffic control, the emergency protocol was adopted, band the plane landed without incident. Passengers were able to leave the plane on foot and were relocated to a similar plane, from the same company that took off from Madrid at 20:45.
