During the school term, in many cases, the school dining room is the only guarantee that the children of these families get at least, one square meal each day. However, with the long, summer school holidays coming up and the closure of the ‘comedor’, there is a risk that some children may well find themselves going hungry.

This grave social problem has been recognized by the ‘Habaneras Primary school’ and the Torrevieja ‘Federation of Parents Associations’ (FAPA) who , together with the support and collaboration of the social services department of the Ayuntamiento as well as bus company, ‘Autocares La Inmaculada’, have embarked upon a voluntary initiative aimed at helping these families. Under the title “So that everyone can” (eat a daily meal), the scheme will come into effect as from the end of this month.

Throughout the months of July August, around 70 children from local, needy families will be transported by bus to the ‘Habaneras’ primary school, aiming to arrive around mid-day. A team of volunteers will provide a series of activities depending upon the age of the children including workshops in Painting, Handicrafts, audio-visual programmes, story-telling and various sporting activities.

The principal activity of this programme, the provision of a daily, three course lunch, will follow making use of the school’s kitchens and dining room. Later, the children will be provided with free transport for the journey home.

In order to raise the necessary funds for this project, the organizers intend to appeal to the general public. During the evening of Saturday 29th June in the very centre of Torrevieja – the pedestrianised, Calle Concepción, from around 18.30h a programme of entertainment and demonstrations of such activities as ‘Body Combat or Tae Kwando will take place alongside a collection point where food or indeed, much needed cash, can be donated.

Tee shirts, promoting the campaign, can be obtained by a donation of 5€. In this manner, it is hoped to raise the almost 2,500€ necessary to provide a daily meal to around sixty local schoolchildren. Your support would be appreciated.
