Beach Volleyball is extremely popular in Spain

The National Under 19 and Under 21 Volleyball Championships are to be held on La Glea Beach, Orihuela Costa from 5-8 September. The announcement was made last Thursday by the Councillor for Sports, Luis Galiano. He was accompanied by Councillor Martina Scheurer, the President of the Volleyball Federation of Valencia, Jose Antonio Navarro and Thomas Herteux manager of the Beach Bars, Chiringuitos del Sol.

Galiano said “We are thrilled that we have been chosen to run the championship and we are sure it will be a major attraction for the Orihuela Costa.”

Martina Scheurer said the intention was to compliment the volleyball with many other activities that will draw spectators of all ages to the tournament. There will be a variety of play areas plus lots of sunshades to keep spectators cool during the heat of the day. She also said that the event will be important in promoting tourism in the municipality

The competition organiser, Thomas Herteux, says there will be almost 100 teams taking part, drawn from all four corners of Spain. To accommodate the large numbers there will be five beach volleyball courts, four for competition and one for warming up. “It is a very important event where we can show off the wonderful beaches that we have on the Orihuela Costa.”
