TORREVIEJA FRIENDLY CITY OF THE ELDERLY
Councillor Inmaculada Montesinos, together with the local president of the National Foundation Sin Barreras (MASBA), José Santiago Sempere, held a press conference last week at which they announced an agreement between their two organizations.
The councillor highlighted the collaboration between the City and MASBA two years ago, during which time they launched the pioneering course ‘Creativity and Musical Expression for the Elderly.’
Into it’s second year, this is now a practical workshop, aimed at introducing them to the world of music through the teaching of an instrument (the violin).
In addition, the President has said his organization intends to extend it’s activities as it works with the city of Torrevieja in the development of programs that will benefit older people living in Torrevieja, claiming that it is the intention of his foundation that the city of Torrevieja be awarded the title of “Friendly City of the elderly” by the World Health Organization (WHO), within the framework of aging and life cycle.
This is a project that addresses the issues that affect the lives of the elderly in any city, such as social, health, economic, accessibility, housing, transportation, open spaces, safety, employment, communication, access to information, social inclusion and respect for the rights of citizens all of which are accomplished with the active participation of older people, taking into account their needs, perceptions and opinions.
The councilor said that the purpose of this agreement is to establish channels for the joint activities of a social health, promotion, assessment, collaboration, training or any other type that will benefit the group of Third age that represents 25% of the local population.
She said that the two parties will constitute a Joint Committee to monitor and evaluation the actions arising from this Agreement.
