HERO BUS DRIVER SAVES GUNSHOT VICTIM

In a scene reminiscent of an action-packed cinematic blockbuster, a Madrid bus driver is being hailed a hero, having rescued a 45 year old man from a gun wielding attacker who was chasing the victim through the streets of the city, having apparently already shot the man in the chest.

The driver of the 188 public service bus was approaching the Marqués de Vadillo roundabout, in the Carabanchel district, at around 10pm on Thursday night. The driver witnessed a man, later to be identified as a 45 year old Ukrainian national, clutching his chest, weaving from side to side of the road, entering the bus lane, forcing the driver to take evasive action to avoid hitting him.

The driver then realized that the victim was being chased by another man, who was apparently carrying a gun and later to be found to be of Russian origin.

Without hesitation or fear of repercussions, the driver then pulled the bus alongside the victim, opening the doors, at which point the man fell to the floor of the bus, and so the driver closed the doors and sped off towards the roundabout plaza, to summon emergency services to assist.

Medics from Samur were quick to attend, treating the man inside the bus for a gunshot wound to the left of his chest, and, although he was bleeding profusely, he was conscious and able to explain what happened.

After being stabilized at the scene, the victim was transferred via an intensive care ambulance unit to the Gregorio Marañón University Hospital, where he was admitted with a serious prognosis.

Officers from the Madrid Municipal Police launched an immediate search for the gunman, and opened up an investigation into the situation. Meanwhile, the victim owes his life to the quick thinking actions of a bus driver going about the routine business of transporting passengers, never considering for a minute how the night might develop into a story of heroism.
