The Criminal Court in Madrid sentenced a man to three months in prison, after he was found guilty of crimes against animal welfare for a case in which he killed his dog by kicking the animal, because if had defecated and urinated in their home.
This is the first case of its kind in Spain, though likely not to be the last, in which criminal proceedings were initiated for a crime of animal abuse. The incident occurred on the 5th of June, 2008, when the man, David FL, saw that the dog had defecated and urinated inside the house, which resulted in the attack of the animal.
The man´s girlfriend witnessed the incident and gave evidence, as did a number of vets who were involved in the emergency treatment of the dog, although there was ultimately nothing they could do to save the Chula´s life.
The animal protection group, El Refugio, brought the case to justice, demanding a sentence of one year in prison for the alleged perpetrator.
