ALLOTMENTS REINVENTED IN PILAR

The Municipality of Pilar de la Horadada has invited applications from residents who wish to take on 10m2 plots of land in Las Villenas for organic gardening. Applicants have until 23 July to submit their names. The list of those successful will be announced 2months later in September.

The council is making available a former orchard covering an area of 3,500 square metres. The land will be subdivided into plots of approximately 100 square metres which may then be used by the successful bidders for a period of two years. The prerequisite is that bidders can only grow organic produce. The council have said that they will provide electricity, irrigation and all equipment.

“Our main objective is to ensure that these agricultural plots remain active, and the produce that they grow is available to those people who are not in a good place economically as they work to find a positive solution to their situations,” said the Councillor of Agriculture, Aurelio Samper.

“The plots will also help to create areas of coexistence where neighborly relations are able to flourish as the residents work together to promote food and maintain gastronomic traditions related to local products.”

Those wishing to be considered for one of the plots need to be resident in the municipality and qualified to perform agricultural tasks. The applications will be vetted by employees from the Technicians of the Department of Agriculture.
