THREE CONTINENTS TO BE REPRESENTED AT HABANERAS

A number of local dignitaries including the mayor of Torrevieja and chairman of the board of Habanera, Eduardo Dolon, Councillor Luis Maria Pizana, and principal organiser, Juan Agustín Manrique held a press conference last week to announce the detail of the forthcoming International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony, Torrevieja, to be held from 22 to 28 July at the Eras de la Sal. This will be the 59th occasion that the competition has been held.

With a total of 16 choirs from 3 continents, 11 countries will be represented in the competition, among them 3 Spanish choirs from Castilla y Leon, Catalonia and Valencia

In addition, there will be 6 choirs from Torrevieja highlighting just how important the work of choral societies is to the city. Many of these will perform at the closing ceremony on the final evening of the competition.

In total, there will be 22 choirs, with a total of 900 choristers taking part. The highlight of the competition, recognized by the award of the International Tourist and Cultural Merit Medal of the Generalitat Valenciana, will be the night of July 27 when the competition awards will be made including the prestigious first prize of Habanera “Juan Aparicio”, which is the highest prize to be won at this great choral event.

The panel of judges will be chaired by Francisco Grau Vergara who will be joined by director and owner of the choir Donostiarra, Jose Antonio Sainz Alfaro and choral teacher, Carmen Cruz Simó.

Vice President of the Board of Habanera, Luis María Pizana said that the opening night will see the competition for soloists, which will be celebrating its fourth edition. Six of the singers will be residents of Spain. They will be joined by singers from abroad, all competing for a cash first prize of € 3,000 together with a trophy worth another 1,000 euros.

Pizana added that the opening evening will also see a number of performances torrevejenses artistes while the jury makes it’s deliberation, including duets, trios and small ensembles that were so successful in last year’s competition.

The Management Board of the competition has said that it will be adapting to the economic conditions, reducing and adjusting various costs of the organization, such as scenery, accommodation and transport of choristers. The event is thought to cost around €40,000 to put on.

Hymns from Torrevieja, Valencia and Spain will once again be performed during the closing ceremony, on the night of July 28. The Madrid journalist Carolina Casado will once again be presenting the event with Spanish television broadcasting a special programme.
