A beach clearly NOT for dogs

The Mayor of a small Valencia town of Xeraco has caused controversy this week, after making the decision to close off a driveway to the beach which was popular with visitors seeking a shorter walk to their sandy haven.

Avelino Mascarell has now fallen out with the town hall of Gandia, who are insisting he reverses the move, although the Mayor is still standing defiant.

Of course, the question as to why he might make such a move ought to be considered before we judge. It is not simply a case of preventing motorists from driving as close as they can to the beach, nor is it even about protecting the environment, the reason is actually one of consideration for a group who are normally banned from using the beaches, especially in the summer.

The reason Mascarell closed off the beach path, was so that he could create a dedicated beach for dogs and their owners to spend some quality time playing in the sand and the sea, without fear of being excluded or ejected, and without interference with other beach goers.

The move was proposed about a month ago and received the backing of his PP team, as well as other council members, although there was some objection.

One of the principal concerns is that the move is “unhealthy” as dogs will spoil the sand and the water at the Blue Flag beach, which may also spread to neighbouring seaside areas.

The higher authorities have also pointed out that the move is illegal, and must be reversed, to which the Mayor has said that the reason he closed off the road was to prevent young people gathering for illegal parties. In fact, the Mayor points out, there is even a sign that says dogs are not allowed, as can be seen in the picture with a young couple enjoying a walk on the beach with their dog.
