The Spanish meteorological office (AEMET) has warned that the first heat wave of the summer is likely to his this weekend, with storms in the centre and north over Tuesday and Wednesday making way for temperatures soaring up to 40 degrees in some inland areas, maintaining those temperatures until well into next week.

AEMET spokeswoman, Raquel Romero, explained that Monday´s instability will continue into Tuesday, causing storms in the northeast peninsula, spreading to the entire northeast quadrant and some points of Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha.

On Tuesday, the storm activity will begin in the morning and affect the same areas, which includes the Sierra de Madrid, though it seems unlikely to come to the capital.

Romero added that late Tuesday instability will disappear and temperatures will begin their gradual rise through the week, from Thursday being “significantly higher” and thus starts the first summer heat wave that will affect mainly the southwest half but also to the northern half of the country.

“It will last and looks set to continue for several days, probably around the whole weekend” Romero continued, saying that there are indications that this heat could continue for a few more days after that.

Forecasts are for temperatures to exceed 40 degrees Celsius in some points of Extremadura and Andalucía, around 38 degrees Celsius in Madrid, and around 30 degrees Celsius in the northern third of the country. In the eastern half, temperatures are also expected to reach up to 30 degrees Celsius on the coast and about 32 degrees inland, although these temperatures are looking slightly lower than the average for the time of year.

The monthly trend this July looks likely to see temperatures above normal in the north and the west, and will be slightly below normal on the coast of Biscay, the Mediterranean and the Canaries. Precipitation this month will be normal in most of Spain and slightly below normal in the Bay of Biscay.

Last weekend saw high temperatures in various places across Spain, on the 29th of June, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria reached 29.4 degrees Celsius, surpassing the June historic high of 29 degrees recorded in 1983. On Sunday, temperatures reached 38.6 degrees Celsius in Córdoba, 37.5 degrees Celsius in Sevilla and 33.3 degrees Celsius in Madrid. However, if you are enjoying the heat so far, spare a thought for residents and visitors to parts of San Sebastián, where temperatures only managed to touch 18.7 degrees Celsius, around about the same as central London.

As always, health in the sun is paramount during these hot summers. Drink plenty of water, not just alcohol which can add to dehydration, walk in the shade, avoid the hottest parts of the day, wear a hat and loose fitting clothes and make sure a quality sun cream or sun block is applied frequently.
