Norwegian airlines have taken delivery of their first Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft on Monday, at a handover ceremony held at Oslo´s Gardermoen airport.

The aircraft id destined to operate on long haul routes to Bangkok and New York, but as a treat to European travellers, the flagship aircraft will be used on shorter journeys around Europe from the 4th of July until the 4th of August.

Plane spotters and passengers on routes between Oslo to London, Alicante, Malaga, Nice and Barcelona will be able to experience the latest addition to their fleet, the first of 8 similar aircraft that the airline has ordered to serve its new long-haul routes between Scandinavia and the US and Asia.

Officially listed as a low-cost airline on the Oslo stock exchange, Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA, is the second largest airline in Scandinavia and third largest low-cost carrier in Europe.

Norwegian Air Shuttle ASA currently operates 75 single-aisle jet aircraft, of which 65 are 737-800s and 10 737-300s. The company has opted to modernize the fleet with state-of-the-art Boeing 737-800 aircraft. A total of 73 such aircraft will be delivered from 2008 to 2014.

The company website lists a number of benefits of the 787 Dreamliner, including 20% lower fuel consumption per passenger compared to similar sized aircraft, more environmentally friendly with 25-30 percent reduction in NOx-gasses, significant reduction in cabin noise, improved air quality in the cabin and Dreamliner can fly more than 1,000 km longer than any similar sized aircraft.

The scheduled route for the aircraft has been listed as:

Oslo (OSL) – London Gatwick (LGW) – Thursday and Sunday.

Oslo (OSL) – Malaga (AGP) – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

Oslo (OSL) – Alicante (ALC) Monday and Friday (Arrives Alicante 09:45, departs 10:45).

Oslo (OSL) – Barcelona (BCN) Monday and Friday.

Oslo (OSL) – Nice (NCE) Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.

The aircraft carries an Irish registration number, EI-NLA, as it is operated on lease to Norwegian. Using that registration number, the aircraft can be tracked by using on-line resources such as flightrader.com.
