LUCKY ESCAPE FROM BURNING CAR

According to police sources the driver of a car was lucky to escape unscathed last Monday when his vehicle burst into flame while driving through Ociopía in Orihuela.

The fire started at about 7.30pm as the female driver was driving along el Palacio del Agua toward the roundabout at the end of the road. For reasons not yet clear, the car started smoking prior to catching fire. The woman immediately pulled over to the side of the road, stopped the car and ran away from her vehicle.

The driver escaped as the car burst into flames. Her only injuries are said only to be minor burns to her body caused when her t shirt was ignited as she left the car.

The vehicle was said to be an Audi of between 10 and 15 years in age. It was quickly engulfed in flames which burnt with such ferocity that the vehicle was destroyed within minutes.

The scene was quickly brought under control by national Police, who cordoned the area off, while the bomberas smothered the flames with foam.

A police spokesman said that the fire occurred at a particularly busy junction with many passers by focused on attending the first day of the sales and it was extremely fortunate that there were no injuries to any member of the public.
