The Senior Judge at the Courts of Orihuela, Doña Joaquina de la Peña, asked the Supreme Judicial Council for their authorization to bring forward the start time of court hearings from 9 to 8 o’clock, with the aim of completing the day’s business an hour earlier.

He says that the working conditions in the building are unbearable as a result of poor air conditioning installation, which does not work.

On Tuesday Occupational Risk managers said that the temperature on the first floor of the building, where there is no ventilation, had exceeded 30 degrees which was incompatible with optimum working conditions.

In requesting permission the Dean has provided a copy of their report to the President of the Supreme Court, Pilar de la Oliva.

The courthouse is relatively new, having opened in June 2005 at a cost of more than five million euros. Just eight years later the air conditioning does not work and during the summer months the building becomes an oven.

It would appear that problems began to occur with the airconditioning system in early June since which time some staff have reported the temperature as high as 40 degrees.

Similar problems also occurred with the system last year when they were only rectified following the direct intervention of the Minister of Justice, Serafin Castilian.
