May the 15th, 1933, was the day a commercial flight, with an 8 passenger and 2 crew carrying Fokker Trimotor plane, first touched down at what would become Madrid Barajas airport, over 80 years ago, having been officially opened in 1931 to serve the aerodromes of Alcalá, Carabanchel and Getafe, bearing the simple but descriptive name of Aeropuerto Nacional de Madrid. In total in 1933, the airport saw 378 commercial flights, carrying 2,873 passengers, through an airport that didn´t even have a terminal building or paved roads, as they were still being built. Now, in 2013, with 80 airlines flying to 179 destinations in 65 countries across 4 continents, around 123,000 passengers use the airport every day on the 374,000 yearly flights, but Thursday marked another milestone in its history, as the one billionth passengers used the airport facility. Columbian Alonso Fernández Ortiz was the lucky recipient of a model aircraft and certificate, which became the focal point of his Twitter feed as he was recognised as going down in the history of the airport. According to analysts, Madrid Barajas airport generated more than 305,000 jobs and over 15 billion euro in added value, the equivalent of 12% of the total revenue of the city.

Spanish small airline Good Fly has announced the launch of two new flight routes between Madrid and Barcelona and San Javier airport. Operating every day except Saturday, the company will be using ATR aircraft, with a capacity of 60 to 70 passengers, and will launch in September. Although the flights will be of a smaller scale to some, it does shed more doubt on the future closure of San Javier airport, once the final decision to open Corvera is made. Good Fly was founded in 2010, operating charter flights as the company lacked full licences to operate as an airline. Since then, the airline has continued to grow by offering flights on behalf of other airlines and now has a fleet of smaller aircraft at its disposal. They are looking at flying outside of Spain in the future.

Ryanair has launched its 2013 winter schedule, with 6 Routes To Alicante, Barcelona (Girona), Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Malaga And Tenerife, all beginning in October 2013, which are now on sale on www.ryanair.com. The company celebrated the launch of its Bournemouth winter schedule by launching a 100,000 seat sale across its entire European network.

Having approved the plans to rename Alicante Airport, the cost of the transport hub becoming “Alicante-Elche Airport” has been set at a maximum of 50,000 euro. The airport authority had hoped the bill would be nearer 40,000, but the final cost covers rebranding and signs, which the Elche municipality will be paying. Often erroneously called “El Altet Airport”, that name was put forward as a suggestion, but was dismissed in favour of naming the airport to include the municipality, which is more in tune with other Spanish airports. The official code name of the airport, ALC, will remain unchanged, as will the name that most people refer to the airport, no doubt.
