Despite government efforts to reduce the number of fatalities from drowning this year, advice doesn´t seem to be being heeded, given the startling number of deaths this month so far, most of which have occurred in this first full weekend of the holiday season.

In the first week of July, a total of nineteen people have drowned in pools, beaches or rivers in Spain, eight of them children, of which thirteen have died so far this weekend. But this figure could increase in the next few hours, after the body of a woman was found near Almería.

Of those killed in the last few hours on Sunday, three have been killed in Galician waters, one of whom was a 37 year old fisherman, who disappeared this morning while bathing in the river Miño, his body discovered this evening by Guardia Civil divers. A few hours earlier, at around 4pm, an 80 year old man died at playa de Muiños, in the town of Muxia, as well as a 31 year old man who died at a beach of Porto do Son in A Coruña. Two other people, a man aged 55 and a woman aged 32 who had gone into the water to assist in the rescue, were also hospitalised in this incident.

On Saturday, in a swimming pool in Borja, Zaragoza, a 4 year old child, of Moroccan nationality, died who was swimming with his 6 year old brother in the adult pool. Three other children drowned on Friday in different provinces. A 2 year old who fell into a pool at night at his home in Campotéjar Alto, in Molina de Segura, and on the same day, fire fighters rescued the lifeless body of a 12 year old from the Daró River, in the municipality La Bisbal d’Empordà, in Girona, as well as an 8 year old drowning that afternoon in a swimming pool at Urtuella, Vizcaya.

Along with these tragedies, a further 6 adults have died, one being a 45 year old man on the beach of Las Canteras in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, one on the beache of L’Estartit, Girona, and another at Barbate, Cadiz, and an 18 year old died in the river Agueda, in the municipality of Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca.

On Friday afternoon, a 69 year old woman died on the beach of Roda de Bara Pellisete, Tarragona, as well as a 73 year old man at Puerto de Santa María, Cádiz.

On Thursday, an 85 year old man suffered a cardiac arrest while bathing in Cunit Beach, Tarragona, close to the shore, and just 20 metres away, a 74 year old man was rescued unconscious and taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Prior to this weekend, an 8 year old died in a pool at Cabra de Santo Domingo, Jaén, and a 6 year old accidentally fell into a pool of a villa in Montserrat, Valencia. Two other children died on Tuesday, a child of 18 months of age who drowned in a plastic pool on a farm of Priego de Córdoba, and a 4 year old died whilst attending a summer school in Campolivar en Godella, Valencia.

A total of 64 people have lost their lives this year as a result of drowning, 14 in June, 7 in May, 11 in April, 5 in March, 4 in February and 4 in January, making July by far the most tragic month of the year so far.
