Following the announcement of the cost to rename Alicante Airport, which is set to become Alicante – Elche Airport quite soon, a campaign to raise the 50,000 euro has already seen cash pledges from many different groups, companies and individuals, with a third of the money being raised in just five days.

Although many people living in the town of El Altet wanted the name to represent their town, a matter which has become something of an urban myth due to the airport never actually being called “El Altet”, it would appear that the potential for business and tourism growth for Elche is what is swinging the decision to support the financial collection.

President of the l’Associació per al Desenvolupament del Camp d’Elx (ADR), Bernardo Torres, has joined the donation collection with an “apolitical” opinion, as he sees the renaming as the perfect formula for Elche to appear on the international map, with leverage of more than nine million passengers annually who will see the name of Elche as they travel. With the arrival of passengers from new markets such as Russia, Hungary, Israel and Romania, the interest in what Elche can offer visitors, in addition to improving the city’s position in the internet search engines, is crucial.

Torres said that everybody knows that the economic resources of the municipalities are tight, and that the money should go to other, more important projects, rather than this type of expenditure. That is why they have created the facility for companies, associations and individuals to voluntarily pledge to foot the bill.

In the first five days, they already collected around 14,000 euro, with a goal to reach the 50,000 target. This money will be used for changing the signs around the area, and by voluntary donations it means that the citizens of Elche do their bit to make it a tourist town, which requires effort and help. However, in the event of more money than the target being collected, then this extra amount would go to help Caritas and their food bank project.

Also all those who participate in making a voluntary donation will be sent a form, Torres states, which will prove your donation to the cause which would also be tax deductable. Anybody wishing to make a donation can do so direct to the bank account which is, 0081 1017 66 00010432088.
