We reported in the Leader last week how work in the Orihuela Courts and the Department of Justice are being put at risk because of the excessive temperatures that staff are having to endure as a result of a broken air conditioning unit, in many cases well in excess of 30 degrees Centigrade, for those of you that prefer it, over 90 degrees Farenheit.

The Judiciary have requested that working hours be brought forward by an hour but still await a response. Although the spares needed to repair the aircon have been ordered there is still no sign of their arrival so a spokesman said the staff continue to sweat as though they were working out on the streets.

But now the solution has been found in the form of 4 large mobile aircon units delivered to the courts by the Department of Justice. Or has it? For whilst the units are in operation the extraction hose needs to be vented through an open window as a result of which the hot air just flows back in.

Added to this is the excessive noise of the devices, so much so that some of the office staff have chosen to switch them off rather than suffer. One worker said that even when they are operating on full power the cool air hardly gets beyond the immediate area of the aircon unit itself.

During the recent winter months the same aircon unit was again broken resulting in staff having to bring heating units in from their homes in order to keep warm.

The CSIF Union warned nine months ago that the situation was completely unacceptable. They continue to point out the law clearly states that for those employees working in a sedentary environment the temperature must not fall below 17 degrees or rise beyond 27, and that latter figure is currently being exceeded in the Orihuela Courthouse.

The airconditioning unit also broke down last summer where staff had to suffer exactly the same sweltering conditions. On that occasion the unit was inoperative for most of the three hottest months being finally repaired toward the end of August.
