The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, called an emergency meeting with the top commanders of Local Police and Guardia Civil to coordinate urgent action plan to deal with the plague of “looky looky” men on the streets of Torrevieja. A number of police officers have been injured recently, as well as vehicles damaged, after the city´s most recent solution to the problem being a promise to fine those who purchase goods, rather than dealing with the source of the problem.
The police have recently defended their use of riot gear whilst the illegal traders have been defended by some as simply “trying to earn a living”, by selling their counterfeited goods, a crime which is being dealt with in every geographical area in Torrevieja before now, but has had a considerable effect on the town centre, with many people stating that they are too scared to go into the city because of the lack of action by the police.
Having already attended a meeting with the government delegate of Valencia, Paula Sánchez de León, in her visit to La Mata, the Mayor has announced the launch of “all necessary means” to start a major emergency plan with reinforcements of the police, after serious altercations have been repeated on the promenades of Torrevieja.
Dolón has now expressed a clear mandate to the Local Police and the Guardia Civil to join forces, and in to curb the illegal sales in order to end a conflict that has been repeated too often. The mayor has said he will not allow this situation to continue and demanded greater involvement of all security forces to ensure the safety of residents and tourists enjoying the summer in the city of Torrevieja.
However, although applauding the action now, many critics still claim that had the situation been dealt with earlier, as it has been everywhere else, rather than the foolish plans of the Torrevieja town hall, the situation would never have escalated to the level is has.
