In an attempt to reduce the number of abandoned animals found in summer, the Department of Health in Callosa de Segura has launched an information campaign under the title “Do not abandon your friend”, in an attempt to reach those people who have a pet but choose not to look after it any longer, either just for the summer holidays, or longer. They hope that they can encourage owners who are in a situation where they have to part with a pet to look for possible alternatives to abandonment, such as the local animal shelters or looking to neighbours to adopt them.

A man, described as “elderly”, died this week on the beach at Moncayo, Guardamar del Segura, after being rescued from the water in an unconscious state. The incident took place at around 11:00 in the morning when Cruz Roja lifeguards were alerted to the presence of a man who had been pulled unconscious from the water by other swimmers, all attempts to resuscitate the victim failed. A SAMU ambulance team joined in the resuscitation attempts, but could only confirm the death of the man. A post mortem is being carried out to determine the cause of death.

A dramatic fire in a fifth floor apartment on calle Doctor Gadea in Sant Joan, Alicante, saw two women pull an elderly man, who was confined to a wheelchair, from a spectacular blaze that could be seen for miles around. Thanks to their heroic actions, nobody was injured in the blaze, which witnesses described as being like watching a film. A number of emergency teams rushed to the scene, including two ambulances and a fire ladder, with fire fighters able to control the blaze which they believe started in the living room and quickly spread to the balcony of the seven floor building.

Elche has launched what they are calling a “pioneering initiative”, by offering rides on horse drawn carriages through the historic centre of both the city and the palm tree growing areas. Each tour lasts for 45 minutes, departing from the tourist office, touring the park, historic centre and palm groves. The fair is 30 euro per journey, with the carriage capable of carrying up to 4 people who would share the price, which is considered a lot cheaper than similar tours in other cities around Spain.

The latest statistics revealed this week show that the arrival of foreign tourists to the Valencia region has increased for the second quarter, with gradual peaking at a growth of 15.4%, with overnight stays also increasing, with a peak of 7.3% which was in May. Spending by these tourists has also increased, after a slight decline in March, now maintaining steady growth.

The Baix Vinalopó fire station in Elche has received its operating licenses this week and is now a fully operational and legal facility. This is just one of around 2,500 licenses that the council has granted of the estimated 11,000 outstanding, in the two years since taking office. However, the difference with the fire station is that it opened in 1990 and has been operating ever since. Juan Molina, who delivered the certificate along with the Mayor, Mercedes Alonso, explained that “the station did not have a business license, but that does not mean we did not meet the requirements, it was just a bureaucratic problem”.

Los Montesinos has become the home to a seismic monitoring station, thanks to an agreement reached by the Department of Agriculture and the Ministry of Roads and Public Works. The equipment will allow for better monitoring of earthquakes in the area, so that scientists can monitor the exact movements of the earth immediately. The data will also be recorded by the National Geographic Institute and published on their website, as well as that of the town hall.

Banks who have ATM cash machines accessible from Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia will have to pay one of the highest taxes in Spain for occupying public space. The rate of up to 855 euro per year has come into force this month, depending on the location of the machine, with the city council hoping to raise 300,000 euro from the initiative the affects 600 cash machines. Other towns such as Badajoz, Malaga, Seville, Zaragoza, Cordoba and Palma de Mallorca also have the fee imposed, and even an opposition group in Torrevieja have filed a notion for the same, but not all cities support taxing the financial institutions. Madrid, for example, says that implementing such fees would be more expensive than what they are able to raise.

International money transfer company Moneygram has been fined one million euro for failing to take action to prevent money laundering in one of the biggest cases in Spain in recent years, in which Chinese businessman Gao Ping was recognised as the ringleader of “Operation Emperor”, a money laundering racket that involved 1.2 billion euro of transferred funds, which resulted in more than 80 arrests, nearly three quarters of whom were Chinese nationals. The company will have to pay 1,050,001 euro for a very serious breach of the rules to prevent money laundering.

The Police in Girona have rescued a 22 year old woman from the Paradise brothel, said to be of Romanian origin and suffering from a “serious mental disability”, and detained the girl’s mother accused of forcing her into prostitution since the age of 18. A foundation dedicated to reintegration raised concerns about the girl to police, after they found her on a roundabout in La Jonquera. She had lived for several years in supervised apartments, due to the inability of her mother to take care of her. The case has now been handed to the courts to investigate.
