HERCULES CF EMBROILED IN MATCH FIXING ROW

Once again Alicante’s Hercules Club de Football has been embroiled in a match fixing row which is threatening to overshadow the start of the country’s top domestic league.

The scandal surfaced when a complaint was made to UEFA by security staff from the betting agency Betfair about unusual betting trends on 8 June at the final Segunda A match of last season v Racing. UEFA investigators said that there were ‘strange and abnormal movements’ indicating that the match could possibly be rigged.

It is suggested that the arrangement required a first half result favourable to the away team, Hercules, with a comeback by Racing in the second period.

Unfortunately though, things did not go to plan, despite Hercules having a multitude of opportunities to score, including hitting the post on 4 occasions during the opening 45 minutes. Having been completely outplayed by Hercules the second half, however, saw Racing turn the tables, completely dominating the game and running out winners by 3-0.

Investigation into the case was conducted by UEFA’s Computer Fraud Agency. Following complete domination of the opening half by Hercules they say that there was intense activity during the interval on the final result, pointing to a Hercules defeat by two goals or more.

But Hercules are completely denying the allegations and have already requested that their lawyers respond to the accusations. They say that if UEFA are so sure there were betting irregularities they should be prepared to release the names of those involved. By failing to do so they are bringing the name of Hercules into disrepute which is completely unacceptable.
