Low cost airlines transported 2.1 million passengers to the Valencia region up until June, representing an increase of 7.9% over the same period last year, according to data released this week by the Institute of Tourism Studies.

As for individual airports, Alicante was the busiest for them, with 1.6 million passengers on low cost airlines, representing a growth of 11.9%, whilst in Valencia itself, there were 507,222 low cost passengers, a decrease of 2.8%.

Nationally, bargain flight providers carried a total of 15.4 million passengers through Spanish airports, representing an increase of 3.2% over the same period last year, showing how Alicante is still maintaining a significantly higher growth than the national average. Traditional priced airlines also increased their national passenger flow by 3.4% in the first six months, carrying 13.3 million passengers. Subsequently, low cost airlines accounted for 53.7% of all passenger traffic, compared to 46.3% by traditional carriers.

As for the geography of passengers, the UK and Germany are still leading the way for low cost airlines, with 32.9% and 18.9% of passengers respectively, with the British market showing an increase of 4.3%, with more than five million passengers carried, but growth in the German market has seen a 10.1% increase, with 2.9 million passengers. Traditionally in third place, Italy saw a considerable drop of 15.7% in passengers to 1.4 million, allowing France to take third place with 7.1% of the total, 1.09 million passengers, 3.1% more than last year.

Despite Alicante´s popularity with low cost airlines, number one is Barcelona´s El Prat, with 3.2 million passengers, followed by Palma de Mallorca, with 2.5 million, and then Málaga, with 1.85 million passengers. On the other end of the growth scale, in the first half of the year, Madrid Barajas Airport experienced a drop of 18.6%, with 1.4 million passengers, fewer therefore than Alicante.

Other airports showing a significant increase though are on the island of Ibiza, where an increase of 15.8% has been recorded, with a total of 398 137 passengers, as well as Lanzarote, with a 9.9% increase to 470,139 passengers, and the airport of southern Tenerife increases by 4.4%, representing a total of 891,712 passengers.
