As technology develops and faster, safer, more reliable systems are developed, it is inevitable that older equipment will become obsolete, having to make way for a younger generation.

That is the situation in Spain, with the nicknamed “Grandma” of the air, the Dassault Mirage F1, being retired from service at the Los Llanos base in Albacete, after 38 years flying the Spanish and European skies, with just over 200,000 flight hours under its wings, to be replaced by the new kid on the block, the EF2000 Eurofighter Typhoon.

A static and airborne display was arranged to bid farewell to those retiring from service, with helicopters and planes saluting their historic matriarch. Emotions ran high as the Patrulla Águila, or Eagle Partol, performed a flypast, accompanying the three F1´s as three of their younger replacements fly alongside, in formation, to bid the fondest farewell to their very own “Abuela”.
