In June Spain welcomed 6,315,882 international tourists, an increase of 5.3% on the same month of 2012. This figure is a new record compared to other months of June for the first time surpassing the six million tourist mark, according to the survey of Inbound Tourism (FRONTUR).

The Nordic countries, UK and Russia were mainly responsible for the growth of the percentage where the destinations to benefit the most were Valencia, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia. In the first half of the year, 26.1 million international tourists visited Spain, 4.2% more than in the same period in 2012 (1.1 million more tourists).

In absolute terms, the British and German tourists were mainly responsible for the increase between January and June 2013 but the Russian market again experienced a strong growth rate (33.6%) during the period. Main source market, Marketplace UK, was the largest contributor to the increase in tourist arrivals to Spain in June, with about 27% of the total, and the Balearic Islands being their first destination. 1,693,694 Britons arrived, up 4.9% over the same month in 2012. Since January, the increase is 4.5% over last year, with 6.1 million tourists.

The second market, Germany, experienced a slight decline of 0.5% in June, the month in which 1,023,505 tourists came to Spain, of which more than half travelled to the Balearic archipelago. In all there were 4.2 million tourists more from Germany, 3.1%, when compared to the same period last year. French Tourist arrivals increased in June by 1.1%, reaching 763,540 tourists recording eight consecutive months of gains.

Madrid and Valencia were the destinations to benefit most. Between January and June, Spain has hosted 3.8 million French tourists, registering a rise of 6.1%. Tourists from the Nordic countries again recorded a strong increase of 26% in June, with a monthly consecutive increase in every one of the last 14 months. A total of 435 369 tourists arrived in June, the market showing a rise of 15.9% from January to over 2.2 million tourists. Visitors from the Netherlands increased by 8.2% in June with 265,495 tourists. In the first half of 2013 this market is up by 2.1% last year.

However, Italian tourist arrivals declined by 7% in June to 324,680 tourists continuing a downward trend from earlier this year, in all a decrease of 12.9% compared to the same period in last year. The main destination was the Balearics in June to receiving 1.7 million tourists, up 9%. It is the fastest growing Autonomous Community in absolute terms (142,000 tourists), dividing the arrivals equally between British and German tourists. Since January, the Baleares has received 4.2 million international tourists, up 10.5%. Catalonia June was the second Spanish destination in Juned, with 1,635,229 visitors, up 6.7%. France, Britain and Russia were the main markets. The strongest increase came from the Russian market, (36.6%).

In the first six months of the year, Catalonia accumulated 6.6 million tourists and an increase of 5.7%. Andalusia recorded 817 221 international tourists in June, recording an increase of 2.5%. Three out of ten tourists were British, although it was the Nordic nations that contributed most to the growth. This community grew 2.3% in January following the arrival of 3.4 million travelers. In the Canary Islands the arrivals increased by 3% in June compared to the same month last year.

Irish tourists showed the largest increased in absolute terms, despite having little significance in the archipelago (6% of arrivals). The annual cumulative total of tourist arriving in the Canaries exceeded 5 million, and an increase of 0.6%. Tourist arrivals in Valencia recorded the highest rate of increase (9.8%) for the third consecutive year, with the United Kingdom and the Nordic countries showing the largest gain. In the first half of the year, 2.5 million international tourists were recorded, an increase of 14.1%. As a result of falls in numbers from Italy and the U.S., the Community of Madrid, recorded a 12% decline in arrivals. In June, 363 891 tourists arrived, accumulative figures of 2.1 million, 4.8% less.

Tourist arrivals by airports and roads increased in June, 6% by air and 1.8% by land. Both methods showed growth of 4.7% and 4.2%, respectively. In terms of accommodation choices, hotels accommodated 67.3% of the total in June but there was a sharp rise in the rental market with a rise of 17.6%.

Since early this year, there has been a similar trend, an increase in the rental market by 10.6%. 68.8% of the tourists who arrived in June made their own travel and accommodation arrangements, nearly 7 out of every 10 tourists that traveled to Spain, which led to an increase in this type of holiday of 10.3%. Those tourists booking package holidays declined by 4.2%.
