Hot on the heels of the success of the Alicante to Madrid high speed train, now running at an average of 87% capacity, even with the additional services provided, Spanish train operator RENFE has announced another new route to serve the Costa Blanca.
From the 28th of July, RENFE will be running a new service between Alicante and Zaragoza, linking the 500 kilometre distance in an average journey time of just 4 hours. Tickets are available on the website, www.renfe.com, and from ticket offices providing for sales of high speed train, AVE, services.
Zaragoza is in the autonomous community of Aragon, situated on the Ebro river, in a valley with a variety of landscapes, ranging from desert (Los Monegros) to thick forest, meadows and mountains. The city is famous for its folklore, local gastronomy, and landmarks such as the Basílica del Pilar, La Seo Cathedral and the Aljafería Palace. Several buildings form part of the Mudéjar Architecture of Aragon, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The down side is that the service will start with just one high speed train in each direction per day, with passengers from Alicante having to spend a night in Zaragoza in order to return the next morning, but a night out in this historic city is well worth adding to the list of places to visit in Spain.
