Of the 180,000 or so passengers who travelled on the Madrid to Alicante high speed train so far in the first month, a constantly increasing number of course, a total of 6,619 of them have taken advantage of the connecting tram service between Alicante and Benidorm, which is provided free under an agreement between the Generalitat Valenciana railway company, FGV, and national operator RENFE.
During the month of June, the connecting tram service was used by 2,453 high speed train passengers, whereas from the 1st to the 16th of July the number increased to 4,166. The conclusion from the train companies is that around 220 people used the connecting service each day, on average.
The aim of this agreement is to facilitate the link between transportation offered by RENFE and TRAM Alicante to AVE passengers, to enable them to reach their destination combining both transport services.
The Luceros Station on the TRAM Alicante network is located about 300 meters from the mainline railway station, and with a 1 hour and 12 minutes journey time to Benidorm, with a tram every 30 minutes during the day, it provides a relatively smooth transition from one mode of transport to the other, albeit the tram journey taking over a quarter of the time to reach Benidorm as the high speed train took from Madrid.
