We all feel the heat in these blazing summer months, but many of us are perhaps not aware of the effects the sun and the heat can have on our body. In a healthy adult, dehydration of just 2.8% body one’s body weight by exposure to heat and after strenuous exercise, leads to a decrease in concentration, physical performance of short-term memory, increased fatigue, headaches and reduction of response time.
The fluid intake needed by individuals varies by gender and weight, but the average recommended amount of water required each day is said to be 3 litres for a man, and 2.2 litres for a woman, with other factors such as medical conditions and recommendations by your own doctor having to be taken into consideration also.
Now, perhaps going against everything traditionally believed, the President of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Society of Dietetics and Food Sciences, SEDCA, Jesús Román Martínez, has published a report that states “a moderate intake of beer, defined as 2 or 3 small glasses (cañas) per day for men, and 1 or 2 for women, combined with a high intake of fruits and vegetables” is the best way to quench your thirst and stay hydrated in summer.
Beer is one of the most recommended drinks to alleviate dehydration, according to the Spanish Society, as well as one of the most desirable in the summer due to its high water content, usually at around 90%, although it should also be pointed out that water has a higher content of water, at 100%.
Experts recommend drinking fluids frequently, especially in the morning and afternoon, even when there is no feeling of thirst. Remember though, if you are going to use this as an excuse for increasing your alcohol intake, as well as the potential medical implications, you should also consider the risks of drinking and then driving, so caution and sensible drinking is still recommended.
