The head of the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) in Girona, Narcís Clé, resigned from his position as head of the road traffic safety and enforcement department, after being caught travelling at 160 kilometres per hour on the AP-7 motorway, where the limit is 120 kilometres per hour, whilst returning home after participating in the Catalan Commission on Road Safety conference in Barcelona.

The sale of scooters decreased by 7.6% in the first half of the year, with just 27,513 units being sold, thought mostly due to increased unemployment among those under 24 years of age, according to data released this week. However, sales in second-hand scooters rose, with 38,996 being sold, 10.5% more than the same period last year.

A 44 year old Guardia Civil motorcyclist died whilst on duty on Thursday, in Cenicero in the La Rioja area. His motorcycle collided with a van on a curve of the N232 road, at kilometre 429, at 15:10 on Thursday afternoon. As a result of the impact, both vehicles caught fire. The van driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. The officer, a native and resident of Logroño, was married and had a child of 12 years of age. Spanish National Police have launched an awareness campaign, specifically targeting social network sites, warning of the dangers of jumping of balconies whilst on holiday. It may seem like a logical thing not to do for most, but each year there is an increase in the number of fatalities caused by the phenomenon known as “balconing”, where, often fuelled by alcohol, young people seem to ignore the obvious dangers that height can bring. Previous campaigns have been run by the British Consulate and other authorites.

An eleven-month old baby girl died this week in the Puerta del Sol of Madrid, after suffering cardiac arrest thought to have been brought on by heat stroke. The mother noticed something was wrong as the child began vomiting and convulsing, and summoned the help of two police officers, who attempted to revive the girl. Within minutes an emergency ambulance joined them, all attempting to revive the girl for around 30 minutes, before transferring her to hospital where she was pronounced dead. A post mortem examination is being carried out.

The Spanish chocolate industry has been moving at a steady pace this month, with chocolate giant Chocolates Valor selling out to Mondelez International, an American multinational company that incorporates the former Kraft Foods brand, and 15 of the top selling products across the globe, namely Oreo, Chips Ahoy!, TUC, Belvita, Club Social, Barni, Milka, Lacta, Toblerone and Cadbury Dairy Milk, as well as Trident, Chiclets, Halls, Stride, and Cadbury Dairy Milk Eclairs, which collectively account for an expected 70% of the company’s growth drive. Currently, MondelÄ“z International has annual revenue of approximately 36 billion dollars and operations in more than 80 countries.

A restaurant situated on the Castell Mar campsite in playa de la Rubinain in Cataluña has become groundbreaking in offering a new menu of food for the delights of its customers. The thing that makes this menu unique is the fact that it is literally the “dog´s dinner”, specifically designed to cater for their canine clientele. The restaurant is the first one in Spain to cater specifically for dogs. Perhaps an unusual move in some many ways, but it does allow for furry friends to dine out with their human companions, and is actually also located near one of only two beaches in the entire region that allows dogs onto the beach.
