The iconic Connie Beauchamp

Fans of BBC medical based dramas are in for a treat, as one of the most iconic female characters returns to our screens. Amanda Mealing is set to resurrect heart surgeon Connie Beauchamp, a role she played in Holby City for 7 years, until leaving in 2010, but Connie will not be returning to the cardiothoracic wards of Holby. Instead, Connie will join Casualty as a confident ED Consultant who is fair, but doesn’t tolerate weaknesses in others. Her reputation and that of the ED is her prime concern and Connie will stop at nothing to ensure all patients get the best possible care. Amanda Mealing says, “When the idea was first proposed, I was surprised to say the least. Then when I heard some of the ideas for the character, I thought it was a genius idea. Two years on and I have daily calls for Connie Beauchamp’s return so I hope this will be as exciting for fans as it is for me. I’ve worked with the guys at Casualty a number of times over the years and absolutely adore them. I honestly can’t wait to get those heels back on and get to work”. Amanda will begin filming at the home of Casualty, BBC Cymru Wales’ Roath Lock Studios, on 18 November, with fans able to catch her on screen for the first time in March 2014.

Over on Channel 4, Southcliffe is a stunning new four part drama penned by award-winning writer Tony Grisoni, previously involved in the hit Red Riding, amongst others, and The starring a wealth of British talent from stage and screen including Rory Kinnear, son of Roy and one of the people tipped to be the next Doctor Who, as well as Eddie Marsan, Shirley Henderson and Sean Harris. Southcliffe tells the story of a fictional English market town devastated by a spate of shootings which take place over a single day; a tragedy that has ripped apart the community. The inexplicable chain of events at the dark heart of this four-part mini-series, due for broadcast in August, shatters time and space for Southcliffe’s inhabitants.

Sticking with the countryside, albeit in the real world this time, The BBC today announces that One Man And His Dog will move to BBC One and feature as part of its popular rural affairs show Countryfile. As the BBC’s main rural affairs programme, with a regular audience of more than six million people on Sunday nights, Countryfile is the natural new home for One Man And His Dog, they say. During its new tea-time slot viewers old and new will be able to enjoy the nail-biting competition showcasing the time-honoured skills and tradition of sheep dog trialling, alongside reports on the people, places and stories making news in the British countryside provided by the Countryfile team. Matt Baker, One Man And His Dog and Countryfile presenter, has a lifelong passion for sheepdog handling. As a young boy, Matt was inspired by One Man And His Dog, and watched his family’s dog gather flocks on their farm, before undertaking a sheep dog training course. Matt welcomed the move and said: “I am delighted that One Man And His Dog is coming to Countryfile”.

As we mentioned Doctor Who too, Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt will battle the deadly Daleks in the show’s 50th anniversary special. Returning to BBC One on 23 November, the highly anticipated adventure will star Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman, David Tennant, Billie Piper, John Hurt and Joanna Page. In a surprise twist in the recent series finale it was revealed John Hurt would be playing a Doctor, alongside Smith and Tennant.

One more Doctor Who snippet, actor David Bradley has been shockingly realistic whilst filming his role as the first Doctor actor William Hartnell, who, along with Brian Cox as BBC Head of Drama Sydney Newman, in “An Adventure in Space and Time”, a forthcoming British television docudrama commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the science fiction series.
