THINGS TO DO ON THE ORIHUELA-COSTA THIS WEEK

Joining in, or ready to fight?

One of the best things about summer in Spain has to be the wide range of cultural events for the whole family to enjoy. Ever changing and in different areas, we aim to bring you the best of these events in our handy guide each week.

Last weekend saw the climax of the Orihuela Moors and Christians fiesta, one of the biggest events of its kind, when the whole city comes together to celebrate and parade in front of thousands of spectators who come from miles around, which is no wonder it is being recognised as tourist interest.

The very first Medieval Market was held on the Orihuela Costa. Not quite of the scale of neighbouring Torrevieja or Orihuela City, but this one was designed to bring the experience of the joys of the event to the people of the coast, rather than having to travel to visit a market further away. Many people did indeed attend, having simply gone for an evening stroll, perhaps a drink or two in the bars, or even sitting down at a restaurant, to which this market was the ideal compliment to their evening.

Slightly to the south, the Santiago de la Ribera was treated to the Spanish Air force Acrobatic Display team, the Patrulla Águila, who performed a dramatic display over the water, before hundreds experienced flying with them for themselves, in the Spanish Air force flight simulator, CASA C-101.

As for this week, some of the highlights include fiestas in Almoradí and Quesada, as well as an animal based event in Dolores, not forgetting the coastal extravaganzas in Torrevieja and Orihuela.

In Almoradí, “Los Santicos de la Piedra” features a range of events from “Crazy bike” and “Horse race” in Plaza de la Libertad, musical concerts from the likes of the YOUTH ORCHESTRA PROVINCIAL OF MÁLAGA, dance shows, football, Moors and Christians parades, and battles, and music from a mobile disco into the night.

Quesada´s summer fiesta sees another diverse range, from martial arts displays by Sasen Ryu Martial Arts Academy, dance shows from “Totally Dance”, the Andalusian Choir of Elche “Agüita Clara”, and more music from a mobile disco, not forgetting their now annual carnival parade.

Dolores will become family orientated with a special day for everyone to enjoy, as well as Moors and Christians taking over their town, and horse shows, dressage as well as a rather bizarre event involving betting on where a cow might deposit it´s “waste”, with cash prizes on offer!

On the Orihuela Costa, we have fun on the beaches with the Orihuela Beach Cup – Beach Soccer competition, bouncy castles for the kids, music from the best tribute bands performing the music of Queen and the Rolling Stones, amongst others, as well as Zumba on the beach and an event for the party goers with an Ibiza White Party, where everybody gets the chance to be in the exclusive, jet setting, rich and famous clique, or at least pretend for the night.

Torrevieja also sees an annual fiesta, the Fiestas de San Emidgio, in the park of nations, one of the patron saints of the city and an event which has touched the hearts of locals for many years, as legend has it that this saint keeps the city safe from further earthquakes. There is also dance, theatre and opera in Torrevieja this week, something to suit all cultural tastes, not forgetting the outlet fair which is continuing on the Vista Alegre walkway.

Other highlights of the week have to include Volley Ball on the beach at Santa Pola, cross running in Pilar de la Horadada, where there will also be a floral and crafts market, offering a feast of experiences for both the eye and the nose, much like next door in Torre de la Horadada, where the fisherman´s market will be in place. If that´s not all, for football fans, you have pre-season football, with Real Murcia playing against CD Olimpic Xátiva at the Pinatar Arena.

This is just an overview of events for this week. We will give you the full and up to date list of events every day on Exite Radio, so make sure you have your radio tuned in to 89.2fm if you´re on the Orihuela Costa, 93.1fm if you are in the surrounding Costa Blanca area of Torrevieja, Orihuela, San Pedro and alike, or you can listen on line at www.exiteradio.com.
