The Ministry of the Interior is spending 6 million euro on new vests for the police, which bulletproof, stab-proof, fire resistant to 200 degrees Celsius and also lighter than the traditional vests. Despite the economic crisis, the director general of the police has justified the outlay as “police safety is a top priority”.
A total of 21,126 vests will be issued to officers, done in three stages, spread between now and 2015, “The aim is to modernize security systems as a key element of national security strategy and provide the agents of the latest and most modern means of defence to develop their missions with the utmost assurance” said Ignacio Cosidó, the Director General of the Police.
The police have already taken delivery of 7,926 units, with another 6,000 being delivered each year until the total allocation is met in 2015.
