The Malpartida air base in Cáceres, Extremadora, has become a first for Spain, if not Europe, as the site now has the first air ambulance crew formed exclusively by women.
The team who make up the crew of the HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) Eurocopter EC135 are commanded by Beatriz Parera, with Gloria Palacios by her side and medics Salobrar Sánchez and Rocío Ramos.
Commander Parera says that the team has met with a very positive response, but “what really matters is not the kind of computer components we have, it is the harmony between the crew and healthcare professionals, as has been the case, for each of our missions”.
The company Inaer España operates a total of 27 medical aircraft, including helicopters and airplanes. In 2012 the company fly a total of 8,228 medical emergency missions, treated 6,658 patients suffering from various conditions, including trauma, heart disease, stroke, sepsis, neonatal transport, and many others.
