The regional government has approved an application from Orihuela town hall for businesses and shops on the Orihuela Costa to be allowed to trade 365 days per year.
The councillor for commerce, Manuel Gallus of the Los Verdes, confirmed the decision, which was proposed in May and endorsed by the bipartisan government team, as well as CLR / CLARO group. The plan had met with opposition from some local trade groups, as well as from neighbouring Torrevieja, who saw it as nothing more than a way of boosting business at the Zenia Boulevard, at the expense of trade for local business.
During the summer, the shops already have approval as the tourism season legislation takes over, but from the 1st of October opening hours are liberalised throughout the year, in a hope of improving tourism and commerce in Orihuela, who are now able to compete with the Murcia region, where shops are already allowed to open.
