The CCOO union is calling for an urgent investigation into the cause of a helicopter crash in which a fire fighter was slightly injured, following the crash as the aircraft was participating in forest fire fighting.
The accident occurred yesterday when the helicopter, which was stationed at the Alcántara airfield in Valencia, was participating in the efforts to extinguish a fire in the vicinity of the town of Pallares, Badajoz.
Although the union are wishing their colleague a speedy recovery, they say in a press release, that “it is not the first time we have to regret an accident of this nature”, as well as commenting on the fact that in this type of work, where risk is present at all times, “the health and safety of those involved must be inescapable”. Lack of information, training and adequate provision of personal protective equipment, together with the establishment of suitable breaks, enable the likelihood of accidents, they say.
The Spanish accident investigators will be conducting an investigation, but the findings of that report will be purely technical, and is not intended to determine or establish fault or liability of any kind. The results of their research, which aims to prevent future accidents, are collected in a report describing how it happened, the same analysis and conclusions as well as recommendations on security.
