The AVE high-speed train will be getting faster after summer, with testing looking positive that will permit the trains to exceed 200 kilometres per hour in the Alicante to Albacete section, initially between September and October. The continuity of communication between the trains and the two signalling systems, the ERTMS2, the most advanced and approved at European level, and the ASFA, the most rudimentary, which basically depends on the expertise and the view of the driver, will have to be confirmed as functional before the increase is allowed, although the route is then said to become one of the safest in Europe. The aim will be to reduce the Madrid to Alicante journey time to just two hours and five minutes.

A maritime rescue team of the Protección Civil in San Javier rescued two occupants of a boat that caught fire while sailing in the waters of the Mar Menor, near the island of Barón. The incident occurred minutes before noon on Thursday, when the 112 emergency centre received notice that the occupants of a boat were in danger after a fire broke out on board. They immediately mobilized a rescue boat, with two crew members, and after locating at boat transferred the two people to their craft, both suffering from dizziness, but otherwise unharmed. The ship itself was burnt beyond repair and is now being monitored to prevent risk to bathers.

Spanish Public ports handled 222.4 million tonnes of freight during the first six months of 2013, representing an overall decrease of 5.61% during the first six months of the year. However, the decline over a twelve month period was 2.2% from July 2012 to July this year, which the Ministry of Public Works said shows “slow, but steady, economic recovery”.
