The Mayor of Orihuela, Montseratte Guillén, who also holds the post of councillor for safety and security, has announced the installation of speed controls in various locations on the coast, aimed at slowing cars down to the permitted limit, thus protecting more vulnerable road users. A number of astute motorists have already seen the signs warning of radar speed traps, more of which are set to appear in the not too distant future.

An increase in “lookie lookie” men arriving on the Orihuela is being blamed on neighbouring Torrevieja. Having sought to move the problem on, some of the illegal street vendors are now giving more prominence to the Orihuela Costa, which also has a considerably smaller police force than Torrevieja, and so more limited resources to deal with the problem. CLR spokesman, Pedro Mancebo, has filed a complaint and said that the growth of this type of activity, without control over the work they do, is “worrying”, and many of them do not have proper safeguards and are “legally questionable” as to their origin.

The councillor for employment in Orihuela has announces a series of courses to take place in the third quarter of the year, specifically aimed to help unemployed people of the municipality receive skills training in order to improve their chances of securing employment. There will be training courses designed for using the internet and social networks, as well as more specific opportunities such as English courses designed for those seeking work in the hotel and hospitality sector.

Aesthetic work has begun in the La Regia area of the Orihuela Costa, with an aim to improve accessibility by removing existing stairs and obstructions along the pedestrian promenade, in an area that has been the focus of complaints by residents for many years, as it is part of an access route for one of the local school bus services.
