The DGT traffic department have calculated that there will be around 3.427 million vehicle movements on the roads of the Valencia region between 15:00 on Wednesday 24:00 on Sunday, as anticipated as part of the special operation surrounding the holiday of the 15th of August.

By province, there will be around 1,755,000 movements in Valencia itself, Castellón will see around 600,000, whereas Alicante will near match Valencia, seeing some 1,250,000 vehicles on the roads.

The busiest times, should you want to avoid the rush, will be between 16:00 and 21:00 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and 08:00 to 14:00 on Thursday.

Around Alicante, the problematic areas will be the A-70 motorway at the entrances and exits of the Alicante, on the N-332 at the crossing of Altea, as well as El Altet, Santa Pola and Torrevieja, with concentrations of cars heading to and from the beaches.

To aid the flow and safety of traffic, the DGT will use all available resources, including ground patrols and airborne monitors, with road works and heavy goods movements restricted.

Wherever possible, the traffic department are suggesting the use of toll roads for your journey, not because it may be an opportunity to make money, but because these routes are often quieter than their “free” alternatives.

The good news for those seeking a respite from the business of summer is that Sunday marks the first of this summer´s “retorno”, or “return”, when the first batch of domestic tourists start to head back inland, relieving some of the congestion on the struggling coastal road networks.
