The Leader’s very own football reporter John McGregor had great cause for celebration recently when he passed his final exam in English Literature at the Open University and thus earned his English degree after five years hard study.
John said ‘At the age of sixteen I unexpectedly failed ‘O’ level English Literature, which meant I couldn’t go on take ‘A’ levels and subsequently went off to join the RAF, whereas all my three siblings went on successfully to college. I have no complaints whatsoever about my life and how it’s turned out and after taking an early retirement to Spain some years ago I began to write and study to keep my brain active. In 2007 I started an Arts course at the OU which covered a great deal: history, art, music, literature and more, and I became hooked. I eventually decided to go for my degree, so I am now John McGregor B.A. To anyone considering such a move I would say ‘Do it’: the whole exercise has brought me great satisfaction and interest, as well as a sense of achievement.’
John’s second book ‘A Flock of Female Friends’ is coming out shortly, The Leader will have all the details.
