A tender contract has been prepared for the creation of a draft study for a period of 24 months of the viability of a train line along the Mediterranean coast, between Valencia and Alicante, including a “feasibility study of the railway connection of Torrevieja”.

The contract for the analysis is the first step that the government has progressed since October 2011, when a protocol was signed to boost the “train of the coast”.

Upon completion of the study, if the results are favourable for the city of Torrevieja, a gap in history that has been present since 1994, when the first motion was muted for a replacement to the closed down route could soon become a reality once again, despite a lack of interest by various municipalities in the area.

It was in 2010 that Torrevieja City Council agreed to seek a recovery of the train network to Torrevieja, including raising the awareness of the importance of the municipality to the Strategic Infrastructure Plan for railways and the proposed Mediterranean corridor, which gained support from almost all political and business sectors.

Various developments, proposals and discussions have since taken place, as well as a more recent campaign, led by the Los Verdes green party, in which some 11,000 people lent their support by means of a signature on a petition to try to force the return of the train.

It was recently discovered that Torrevieja town hall is still paying 9,839 euro per year, for a twenty year renewable contract, for the use of a sic kilometre stretch of the former line which has been converted into a walkway, after an agreement was made in the year 2000. First opened in 1869, the railway to Torrevieja was closed in the late 1980´s.

It is considered that a project of this nature would significantly improve all aspects of economic and social life of the town of Torrevieja, as well as its wide geographical catchment area, benefiting everyone and especially to tourism and trade, albeit with casualties in the form of land and the natural environment that resides in the area where the train would run.
