Ryanair has confirmed that it has initiated legal action against online travel agency Rumbo, following accusations of inflated flight prices for relatives of the victims of the train crash Santiago de Compostela.

As previously reported, a statement by relatives of one of the victims of the crash indicated that the price of a flight increased overnight from 471 to 800 euro, for two people wishing to travel to the crash centre.

The flight was booked through online agency website Rumbo, which Ryanair claimed had subsequently sold Ryanair flights “inappropriately and at inflated prices to passengers”.

This provoked a response by Rumbo , who explained that their main task was to “mediate between the airlines and the end customer, bringing the latter comparison service that shows the seats available for all airlines in the market, and allowing the end user to choose the desired flight reservation”. They continued to explain that neither Rumbo “nor any other agency can modify the availability or fares for flights, a decision that can only be made by the airlines”.

Ryanair said then that they had conducted an internal investigation which confirmed “conclusively” that there was no reservation for that day in the name of either of the passengers who raised the complaint, and it was the travel agency that led these people to believe that tickets were available on that flight.

Therefore, Ryanair state that as Rumbo are unwilling to issue a corrective statement of the incident, they have “had no choice” but to take legal action, and insists that “there was no record of a reservation”, as indicated, on any of the three Ryanair flights from Madrid to Santiago on the 25th of July, nor is there any record of a any reservation made for 471 euro for any of the three flights that day, and that the company “cannot raise rates once the reservation has been made”, presumably with the exception of post sales taxes and increases that they have levied onto customers previously.
