A child of three and a half years of age died this afternoon, after being locked inside a car in the town of Riópar, Albacete.

The Guardia Civil are investigating the death of the child, who was taken by his parents to the health centre in the town, where, after undergoing resuscitation attempts for more than an hour, medics could only confirm the tragic death.

The mayor of the town, Javier García, said in a radio interview that the incident took place at around 5:30 in the afternoon, when the child was locked inside the car whilst the parents were in their house. It is thought that the child became trapped inside accidentally, and could not escape.

Sources close to the investigation suggest heat stroke as the probable cause of death. The weather forecast for Albacete on Tuesday showed highs of 34 degrees Celsius, with an anticipated temperature of 31 degrees at the time of the incident.

The child’s family was on holiday Riópar, a town set to celebrate the fiesta of their patron saint, with the entire neighbourhood now in shock by the tragic news.
