CHURCH TAKING ORIHUELA MAYOR TO COURT

The Mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, seems to have made a new enemy, after the church has decided to take him to court over an argument about ownership of a statue, La Diablesa, what we might call a “she devil”, one of the symbols that often appears during the Easter celebrations.

Guillén said that he was surprised by the fact that the Church has gone to court, especially given the good relations that “bind both institutions”, but stressed that the restored monument is the property of Orihuela, and the town hall were merely put in charge of it on behalf of the people of the municipality.

However, the argument seems to have come to light after the former councillor for culture, Pepa Ferrando of the Partido Popular, the person now leading the opposition group in trying to take power from Guillén, “gave” the monument to the church, for which they claim to have evidence in the form of the municipal register.

The current Mayor stresses that “we are convinced that it is ours, and not only us, but municipal governments before us. It has always been municipal property”.

It was also noted that the church had no interest in the piece prior to its restoration, as it was seen as a demonic symbol. Guillén is standing by his claim that it belongs to the people of Orihuela, to which he also emphasised that, “I hope that relationships do not deteriorate”.
