Opposition member of the PSOE in Torrevieja, Dora Fernández, has reinstated a previously rejected motion for allowing accompanied dogs to use the beaches of the municipality, a move refused by the ruling Partido Popular.

Fernandez argues that this measure would benefit and expand tourism in the city and that there are many people who spend their vacation with their pets and, according to Fernández, allocating a timeslot and area where these animals and their companions can enjoy the coast would hugely enhance their experience of the area, even if the costs of cleaning are shared.

Allowing the move would improve the city’s image in the eyes of pet owners, who often consider their animals to be one of the family, so much so a number of hotels have already started to allow pets to stay, meeting the demands of their guests. We previously reported how some councils have already created dog friendly areas, and we even featured a restaurant that has a special menu available for dogs.

There are numerous initiatives collecting signatures to allow “pet friendly” beaches, one is listed on the social petition website change.org, where more than 500 people have already signed in support of the move in Torrevieja.

Currently, there are some 16 beaches along the Spanish coast where dogs are allowed at certain times, some in this region, so allowing the move would show Torrevieja to be forward thinking in allowing modern families to thrive in a city that is claiming to be of great tourist interest.
