Work has begun on repairing the facade of the former ice factory in Torrevieja, after the pavements surrounding it had been cordoned off for the past month, in order to protect pedestrians and traffic from potential injury caused by falling debris.

The structure, which has been derelict for decades, has been listed as a protected building since 1986, as one of the “elements of architectural interest” within the municipal catalogue, and is said to be one of the few remaining historic examples of industrial architecture left in the city.

Constructed on a road intersection, the main characteristic of the building is its isosceles triangular shape and high windows that resemble the view of a boat from the bow.

Because of the unique qualities of the building, one heritage foundation is urging the town hall to have the building listed with the Cultural Heritage Department of Valencia. Former councils have been criticised for destroying the heritage of the city, so campaigns to keep whatever elements are remaining envoke passions with those keen to preserve the history of Torrevieja.
