This week, ITV are dominating the headlines, with the announcement of the return of some of their most popular shows, and some that may well wish to forget!

Following on from the return of crime thriller Vera, we peek into the world of darkness and shadows as Whitechapel returns for three new stories, spread over six episodes, with the middle tale written by one of the stars of the show, Steve Pemberton. The series begins at a party for the launch of Edward Buchan’s first book: ‘A History of Murder in Whitechapel’, with Rupert Penry-Jones and Phil Davis both making welcome returns, with the first episode scheduled for Wednesday the 4th of September.

There´s even more from ITV, with the return of Doc Martin. In the first of eight new episodes, starting on Monday the 2nd of September, wedding bells are ringing for the Doc and Louisa, but will the marriage finally go ahead? You will have to tune in and find out, as Martin Clunes, Caroline Catz, Eileen Atkins and the rest of the cast return to our autumn screens.

Then ITV takes a bit of a tumble, albeit only in an entrainment sense, as Through the Keyhole returns, made famous by David Frost and Loyd Grossman, a slightly less intellectual team takes over from Saturday the 31st of August, as Keith Lemon, one of the alter egos of comic character actor Leigh Francis, takes over the reins with a combination of regular and guest companions.

Then, still on Saturday night, preceding Through the Keyhole, Davina McCall hosts a “brand new entertainment show”, Stepping Out, featuring six celebrities and their real life partners put their relationships to the ultimate test…via the form of dance. By celebrities, they mean Brian McFadden & wife Vogue Williams, Denise Welch & husband Lincoln Townley, Oritsé Williams & girlfriend A.J Azari, Laurence Llewelyn Bowen & wife Jackie Llewelyn Bowen, Carl Froch & girlfriend Rachael Cordingley and Glynis Barber & husband Michael Brandon.

Talking of music, albeit in a vague sense, another ITV gem to start on Thursday the 5th of September on ITV 2, is The Big Reunion: On Tour, when former pop group members get put back in the limelight for a UK tour. As the press release says, “ITV2 follow Five, Blue, B*Witched, Liberty X, 911, The Honeyz and Atomic Kitten as they say goodbye their families and head back on the tour bus. Following the success of the TV series and the sell out tour at the Hammersmith Apollo, the bands prepare to get back on stage to perform in front of over 100,000 fans – from raucous parties, to tears and tantrums, from illnesses to stage malfunctions, The Big Reunion: On Tour captures the highs and lows of life in a pop band.”

Switching channels for a moment, though sticking with music, Katherine Jenkins is set to take centre stage at this year’s BBC Proms in the Park in Belfast next month. The multi-platinum selling Welsh singing sensation will be flying into Belfast for the event at the Titanic Slipways on Saturday the 7th of September. Katherine says: “The Last Night of the Proms holds many special memories for me, having performed at the Hyde Park concert and Welsh Proms in the Park several times. I’m thrilled that I will now be adding Belfast to the list and look forward to singing with all my friends there!”

Finally, we´ll jump over to Channel 4, where a new series offers an intimate and explosive portrait of Britain by night, seen through the eyes of the people best positioned to witness it first hand – door staff. “Bouncers” is filmed in the North East and Essex, and is a six-part series that shows that Britain is out to get smashed – old and young, rich and poor, and across cultures – and it doesn’t seem to care about the consequences.

So, from our roller coaster of televisual entertainment, with some top quality shows, and some not so top quality shows, either way it looks like there is something coming up to satisfy everybody, and you can get all of the latest updates, in advance, from our website dedicated to the world of television, www.theleader.tv, where you can also watch the main UK channels, for free, on your computer, tablet or smartphone.
