Councillor for town planning in Orihuela, Antonio Zapata, has announced that railway infrastructure company ADIF, and the building firm Sacyr, plan to open the underpass at the Bigastro end of Orihuela within two months, returning the traffic flow to one of the main routes into and out of the city.
Initially, they plan to open a single lane in each direction, which had previously been impossible due to “technical reasons”, as ADIF-Sacyr failed to comply in part with expectations, said Zapata. “ With the reopening of the middle of the underpass and one lane in each direction, it will resolve, in part, the traffic problems created by the railway works”, he continued, explaining that the other two lanes will have to remain closed to allow the work to complete.
“ADIF and Sacyr have understood the demands of the City Council to improve the mobility of Orihuela”, continued Zapata, before stating that technicians working on site insist that at the beginning of 2015 they will be “completely in compliance with established timetable for implementation”.
