Boat Fishing.

A day off work gave “Palomete Ian” a chance to take his dad Sam and mate Dave out for a day’s sea fishing with ‘Orca Steve’ on a bright but blustery Sunday morning.

The wind, swell and current came from the east so they anchored up in a good position on the edge of a wash-in near an old river bed where the sonar showed some decent shoals of fish. The lads dropped in and within minutes were pulling out pandoras and bogues. During the morning they hit on a passing shoal of mackerel and it was a busy, busy time catching with the lads pulling out five at a time.

Ian got a good take and landed a red snapper and the rest of the crew all lost hooks to what could only have been Triggers. Those infamous big hits then nothing as their teeth bite through the nylon. It was a great morning with the lads taking a decent bag of fish home for Dave’s dad Paul to grill on the barbie!

A few days later Steve took Bev, Gary and their children Lucy, Emma and Daniel out for some prawn dangling. Steve decided to anchor the boat in a position over the edge of the wash-in near the old river bed as before as the depth was only 80 to 90ft and gave the younger members a better chance of bagging a fish. The decision was a good one and they were all soon catching pandoras, bogues, pickerels, mackerel and small red snappers. Little Lucy was the surprise of the day catching the most fish, most variety of fish and the biggest fish which was all down to her enthusiasm and determination, well done Lucy!

Mike and Catherine who are out on holiday in Mojacar brought their children Ben, Joe, Sam and their friend Jake out fishing with Steve. They are all keen fresh water anglers back in the UK but had not done much sea angling from a boat so it was a new experience for them all. Young Ben, Joe and Sam were very keen asking loads of questions about the tackle and admired the multiplier reels and boat rods which they used for the first time handling them like they were young pros!

They fished a few different marks but had the most success again in the old river bed where all the family caught plenty of fish which included small dentex bream and red snapper, pandoras, bogues, mackerel, weavers, twin and banded bream. On returning to port the lads were full of fishing chat and excitement and picked out some fish to take away and cook. A great day of fishing which reminded Steve of the enthusiasm and excitement that he felt when he was a lad.

Shore Fishing.
Neither ‘Tubby Jimmy’ nor ‘London Bill’ managed to catch anything worth mentioning.

Coarse Fishing.
‘Baza Barry’ fished the big lake with his two English mates over on holiday, an all evening and morning session (With a sleep in between) bagged over 200lbs of carp and barbel.
A few of the Los Gallardos Grumps went to Puentes near Lorca, Keith with Dave, Paul and Malcolm who were on holiday. All caught fish using pole and waggler. Dave 50, Paul 48, and Malcolm 21, all carp. (You surely didn’t blank Keith?)

Now the Rods and Reels club are in the closed season so to speak, there is still work to be done. This is specifically a work party at Guardamar. There are 24 permanently cut out and maintained pegs. These are looked after by 4 local clubs, who all have ownership of 6 pegs each to keep the venue fishable. Worse case, if R&R’s 6 pegs are not maintained then on the 1st match of the new season 2013/2014 which is on 4th September the draw will be at the normal time but the first hour will be a work party, then the match will commence. Match will be 10am to 4pm.

The A.G.M. will be held on the 22nd of September starting at 10.00am at Serasins bar at La Marina.
With the new season starting 4th September 2013, now is the time to join and have a complete fishing season either for matches or pleasure.

PLEASE NOTE
The club has some vacancies at present, if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 966729293 or 603535771.

The Abbey Angling club fished their final match of the Summer Series at Nancy’s.

The match was transferred from the Embalsa de Beniarres due to the high water level. The road down to the lake is dangerous and unsafe due to water washing the road away causing subsidence.

The water at Nancy’s was alive with big mullet, but they were reluctant to feed on anything. The sluices are still putting in a fair amount of water, which is helping to keep the water oxygenated and that meant no dead fish about.

The water is still fishing reasonably well with maggot and corn the bait of the day.

1st Terry (Swing em) Screen with 24.1/3lbs fishing the pole using maggot.
2nd Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare with 21.1/2lbs fishing the pole using bread and maggot.
3rd Stuart (married again) Taylor with 17.2/3lbs fishing the pole using corn.

Next week sees the start of the winter series, and all the details are available on their website www.abbeyangling.com or from the match secretary Terry Screen on 965328368

Junta’s artificial reef to keep fishermen out.

Concrete blocks similar to those at the centre of Gibraltar spat to be laid along Roquetas coastline.
The Junta will be placing 75 concrete blocks in five different locations along the coastline of Roquetas to prevent overfishing.

The Junta will be placing 75 concrete blocks in five different locations along the coastline of Roquetas to prevent overfishing.

The regional government plans to drop 75 concrete blocks similar to those placed in disputed waters in Gibraltar onto the seabed in Roquetas de Mar in a bid to prevent overfishing.

The blocks, spread over seven square kilometres of coastline at a depth of less than 35 metres, will act as an artificial reef to dissuade fishing trawlers, help protect sea grass prairies and boost fish stocks.

The operation is due to be carried out after the summer to avoid disrupting the activities of bathers.

The move comes following complaints of illegal fishing in the area, known for its rich sea grass, which provides an essential eco-system for hundreds of marine species (Almería holds up to 92 per cent of the region’s sea grass prairies).
The aim is to prevent certain types of trawlers from fishing in the area while allowing less destructive vessels to continue their activities.

Latest license information.

There is a new loophole for those without a nie number who want an Andalucian beach and/or boat fishing license. It will mean a trip in person to Almeria with a friend who has a nie number and it has a 50/50 chance of working! The other loophole for fishing the beaches and boats in Andalucia without an NIE document is to make a trip to Murcia. Or the new UK sea fishing license should suffice BUT although we have been told this can be used here I have not seen a copy of this rule on paper and so it could be a problem if pulled up by the police who probably don’t know about the rule.

There is now a loophole for those wanting coarse fishing licenses for Andalucia who don’t have NIE documents or/and don’t want to do the 24 hour course in Spanish, see me for more details. There is talk of an agreement between all regions for any license to be used elsewhere, watch this space.

I’m pleased to report the Beachcomber’s three web cams are working again and the other good news is they work on both 32 and 64 bit systems and on any browser so checkout Mojacar’s weather and Mediterranean Sea conditions here. www.beachcombermojacar.com/beachcomber-webcam/

For up to date information on any of the above see John at the Beachcomber Bar Restaurant on Mojacar Playa or tel 950 473 099. In case of difficulty reaching me (Probably out fishing) ask staff for my mobile number. You can also contact me on Facebook @ ‘John Beachcomber Mojacar’.
Tight lines, Beachcomber John.
