Having already set itself up as one of the most popular comedy shows of current times, ITV´s Benidorm will return to our screens in January, for the sixth series, with a seventh due to be filmed in the spring.

This weekend, with our exclusive access, The Leader joined one of the shows biggest stars, Jake Canuso, who plays Spanish barman Mateo, as he was signing copies of his 2014 calendar at Morgan Tavern, otherwise known as Neptune´s in the show.

Early in the day, the queues had already started to form, as young and not so young, male and female, started to gather for a chat with their TV hero, with clicks and flashes of cameras a plenty, as the personally signed calendars were quickly snapped up.

Speaking before the event, Jake explained how the people of Benidorm have, “taken us into their hearts”, continuing, “It´s so lovely that everywhere we go people want to stop us and chat, or take photographs, but it´s usually when we´re working, so it´s really hard to spend any time with them. That´s why I decided to do these signings, to try and give a bit of my free time back”.

The way that the TV show spans all ages was clear from the crowds who attended. First in line was a young lady, aptly named Summer, stating that she, “Wants to marry him”, as her way of showing adoration, with a lady who´s nicknamed Madge, due to her uncanny likeness to another favourite character.

One after the other, Jake did indeed take time with everybody, even waiting at the end as he had been told that two of his Twitter followers had just arrived in Spain, were delayed on their flight, but so desperate to meet him, which they duly did.

The next series of Benidorm promises a whole range of new characters, including the return of some very popular faces to TV, and although we promised not to give away any spoilers, we can tell you that a lot of the established characters will also return, so hopefully your favourite will be back at the Solana for more fun and merriment, with the writer and creator, Derren Litten, excelling himself once again.

If you couldn´t make this event, the next one is on Saturday the 14th of September, which will be in the Flash Hotel, directly opposite Morgan Tavern, where more calendars will be available, as well as the same chat and photo opportunities as today, time permitting.

Meanwhile, we have got two copies to give away, which will also be personally signed for you, if you know the answer to this question. What was the name of the sports based TV show that Jake recently took part in? If you know, email the answer to office@theleader.info, or write your details on a piece of paper and drop them into our offices, before Friday, along with your name and address, and we will pull two lucky winners from the hat and Jake will sign your calendar for you.
