There is no doubt that the high number of people travelling in summer creates one of the biggest problems of the year as far as road safety is concerned.
The large influx of vehicles, high temperatures and long journeys, make the summer period one of the key moments in the struggle to keep down the number of accidents on our roads.
As a result, Línea Directa Aseguradora, one of the Spanish companies most committed to road safety, has drawn up a short list of recommendations for all drivers, in an attempt to minimise the dangers involved and enable people to enjoy their holidays and keep safe:
1. Prepare the journey in advance: do not improvise or take the route you will follow for granted. Calculate your route, stops and rest periods carefully before setting off, especially if it is the first time you have travelled to your chosen destination.
2. Check your vehicle: check tyre pressure, water and oil levels and even the air conditioning system, especially if it hasn’t been recharged for several years.
3. Have a rest before setting off: not only is it recommended to have a rest every 2 hours, but also before the journey, especially if you are going to get up early in the morning. It is essential to allow enough time for carrying out small tasks such as preparing your luggage.
4. A car is not a removal van: do not take too many suitcases, and above all, be careful with how you arrange them in the vehicle. A loose object inside a car can be a lethal weapon in a crash.
5. Take turns driving: if the possibility exists and the journey is long, do not think twice about sharing the driving with another person. This reduces the chances of being distracted and is an effective measure against boredom and fatigue.
6. Take on enough fluids: in some parts of Spain, temperatures in summer can exceed 40 degrees centigrade, so it is extremely important to drink water or soft drinks continuously, even if you are not thirsty. In addition, if you are going to stop to eat something, avoid any type of drink which contains alcohol.
