The College of Opticians and Optometrists of Valencia has warned that daily use of tablet computers in classrooms is causing an increase in the number of students with visual impairments.

In a statement, the president of the College, Vicente Roda, said that students “are increasingly spending more time on activities that use more near vision, such as reading, watching television, working on the computer or playing video games, which is resulting in an increase in myopia”, or nearsightedness, adding that it is expected that in the year 2020, 33% of teenagers will have myopia as a result of improper use of these devices.

According to Roda, using phones, tablets, computers or electronic books generates visual fatigue syndrome because it focuses directly on a light source for a long time and, although the eye is prepared to observe this type of display, it causes an increase convergence in capacity, resulting in the occurrence of eyestrain and false myopia.

In this sense, he said, it is advisable to keep screens at a distance away, use a large font size for reading, so effort is reduced, increase the contrast of the screen, have good lighting, preferably natural light, use high-resolution screens and avoid reflections.

The College has also warned that one in four children have started the school year with undiagnosed vision problems, and that only 25% of them go unchecked every year.

Professionals also say that it is essential that children start the school year with their eyesight at peak performance, as they will have to face many hours of reading and studying that will be extremely demanding on their visual system.

According to their data, in Spain it is estimated that 30% of all school failures are directly related to undetected impaired vision, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, amongst others.

Symptoms that may indicate that the child has visual problems include frowning, screwing up eyes or turning the head and neck to look away or close, or eyes becoming irritated when reading or writing, headaches, mistakes when reading or writing, sensitivity to light and tiredness are also possible indication, according to Roda.
